TOLKIEN Review
Speaking of violence, the graphic scenes shown are actually quite excessive for a PG-13 rated movie. However, since those scenes are shown in small doses, I don’t think they are too traumatizing for ages ten and up, though all parents should decide for themselves.
Throughout, the biopic followed Tolkien from his early teens until he started writing the Hobbit. I think Nicholas Hoult really nailed his role from the start. Also, the amount of research conducted was palpable. I think the attention to detail would have made Tolkien proud too, although of course, the Tolkien estate has refused to have anything to do with the biopic. Though I’m sure there must have been some amount of creative license, from the start Tolkien seemed very accurate and sincere to me.
The creators also gave a lot of attention to Tolkien’s obsession with and his knack for languages, including his own. I especially liked how they showed why he chose to make a home for that language in Middle Earth. Overall, I’m very glad this movie made it to completion. Though the Tolkien estate refused to have anything to do with it, Tolkien feels very sincere and accurate. It even has Tolkien’s great-grandson Kallum Tolkien acting in the film. So yes, Tolkien is definitely worth going to see. If you have any questions about it, feel free to ask below.
